"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

We've Decided: We're Walking Again!

Mom and I have decided: We're going to do the breast cancer walk again! We have been talking about it for a while. Initially, we had thought that we might walk in the 2-Day walk that is being held on the first weekend of May. But due to some scheduling constraints, we realized that that probably wouldn't work.

I was a bit disappointed, because 2008 marks TEN YEARS of Mom being cancer-free, and I thought that walking together would be a great way to celebrate and to help make sure that many other people make it to ten years (and more!!) of health. So, we decided that we would probably walk in 2009 instead. Which wouldn't have been bad--I mean heck, it would be an opportunity to celebrate ELEVEN YEARS of freedom from cancer.

But just earlier this week, I heard on the radio that the 3-Day is coming back to DC!!!! Since we last participated in the 3-Day together in 2002, the company that was running the event has been dismantled. Unfortunately, it seems that the funds weren't being handled in as efficient a way as possible, meaning that less money was going toward breast cancer research and treatment than we had thought. We were all really disappointed about that.

However, the walk is now being run by a new organization, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the same beneficiary that is involved in Race for the Cure each year. I have volunteered a few times for this new, revamped 3-Day, and I am very impressed.

I am SO excited that Mom and I will be able to share this momentous experience once again!
