"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

The Value of a Dollar

These days, it may seem as if a dollar isn't worth very much. In these trying economic times, with disappointing stock performance, the value of a dollar may seem like just about nothing. But I learned differently this past weekend.

On Saturday, I heard a story from one of the walkers about a donation she had received. A few weeks ago, on a Monday morning, she went to a local restaurant to collect donations there. She was leaving the restaurant, and just as she was about to reach her car, a woman ran out after her. She said, "All I have is one dollar, but I want to give it to you." The walker was very appreciative and said to her donor, "You never know. This dollar may buy the test tube in which the cure for breast cancer is found."

The donor responded, "I hope so. I start chemo tomorrow for my breast cancer."

Think about it. One dollar. One cure. Millions of lives saved. Never underestimate the value of one dollar or of a generous spirit. I know, without a doubt, that you have saved countless lives with your donations to our walk, and my heart will always be grateful for that.
