"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Our Heroes

As Mom and I get closer and closer to our 3-Day adventure (which is just 53 days away!!), and as our training gets more and more intense, my thoughts turn more often to our heroes: those who struggle with breast cancer and those who provide us with our much-needed financial support so that we may participate in the 60 mile walk in October. Without the former, there would be no reason to take part in the event, and without the latter, we'd have no means of doing so.

Today, I want to extend a thank you to our two newest heroes: my cousins, Geoff and Tiffany. Geoff and I are the cousins on the McCord side of the family that are closest in age, and some of my earliest memories are of spending time with him in Cranford. As really small children, we used to slide side-by-side down our Grammy's staircase on our tummies--we thought this was so much fun. Grammy used to take us to Friendly's for ice cream, and occasionally, the two of us were mistaken for twins. (I think it was because we had the same haircut!) When we were a bit older, we used to pretend we were superheroes, using Grammy's scarves as our capes. As we've grown into adulthood, our friendship has continued, and I've always felt so lucky to have Geoff as my cousin. In June 2007, he married Tiffany, and their wedding day was one of the highlights in the family calendar last summer. Mom and I are so grateful for their support, and we are now 72% of the way toward our goal! Speaking of heroes . . .here is a picture of Geoff and me (circa 1979), in our superhero capes, ready to take on the world!
