"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

A Cool Breeze On My Face and Gratitude In My Heart

When I was getting ready for work this morning, I did not include my walking cap with my t-shirt and shorts that I threw into my backpack, because I thought I'd heard it wasn't going to rain this evening. Wrong! If it's summertime in DC and there is the slightest bit of humidity in the air, rain is always on the menu during the evening hours. Lesson learned.

Nonetheless, it was a wonderful walk, because as the rain came down, the temperature cooled, and there was a lovely breeze on my face for most of the walk. By the time I neared home, the sun had reappeared, and I exchanged my umbrella for sunglasses, happy to see the sun again.

And speaking of happy, I'm thankful to report that Mom and I have each received a new donation, bringing our current total to $1732, which is almost 30% of our goal. Our most recent supporter is a dear friend of mine from grad school. We met during the summer of 2005 and enjoyed the best class I took during the years of my Masters program. The next semester, which was my final semester of grad school, she and I endured what was definitely the least fun class I took over the 2-1/2 years I spent at the Elliott School. In the years since graduation, she has remained a wonderful friend, and I am so thankful for her donation to both Mom and me. Thank you, dear friend!
