"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

A Walk Among the Rainbows

As I mentioned yesterday, my goal was to walk all the way home from work this evening. Due to meteorological and cold-related challenges, however, I didn't quite make it. Instead, I walked from work to Foggy Bottom, hopped on the metro, hopped off in Arlington, and I walked the rest of the way home. Adding up the 1-1/2 miles I walked before work, the almost 2 miles I walked at lunchtime, and my evening jaunt, I totaled just over 6 miles for the day, which I think isn't too bad, given the fact that I was sick all weekend.

I think I remember from my seventh grade Earth Science class that there are just a few magic hours each day when rainbows can appear. It has something to do with the angle of the sun's rays in relation to the Earth, and there has to be at least some moisture in the air, too.

This evening was full of magic. On my walk home, I noticed FOUR separate rainbows in the sky! As I approached the Foggy Bottom area downtown, I saw a double rainbow, which stretched all the way from the top of one building, over the construction area where the old GWU Hospital used to stand, to the top of another building a couple of blocks away. I think it's the first time I've ever seen a whole rainbow, a complete semi-circle of color over my head. Above that was a faint second rainbow. I was so excited to see this that I called Mom to tell her! When I got to Arlington, I saw another rainbow (or maybe the same one?), although this was much smaller. As I continued my walk to the west, another rainbow appeared before me. What a beautiful evening for a walk! And to think, if I'd given into my true wish--to take the metro all the way home--I would have missed this rare display of beauty.
