"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Back to Regularly Scheduled Programming and a New Thank You

I spent all day yesterday in New York City, which meant that I didn't do my usual walking. (Although I think that covering several city blocks probably counts for something!) Because I knew in advance that my train wouldn't get back here until about 3:00 this morning, I made plans to take today off from work. This meant that I got to walk during the day today, and I covered 10 miles. Yay! Also, on Friday and Saturday, I spent some time on the exercise bike, so that not all of my training consists of walking. I think this was a smart idea, because when I woke up on Saturday morning, my legs were a bit sore, which means I worked muscles that my walking doesn't. I'm hoping to walk a few miles tomorrow, and on Wednesday after work, I'll participate in my first "official" training walk, led by a volunteer walk leader. We plan to cover 11 miles. More to follow!

I want to take a moment to thank my friend, Jeanette, who has become our most recent sponsor. Jeanette has been a friend of mine for nearly a decade. Her job with the State Department has taken her to Montreal, Cracow, and most recently the Azores, so we don't get much of a chance to see each other. Whenever she returns to DC, we get together for dinner, and I'm always happy to catch up on her adventures. In spite of the distance between us, our friendship continues, and I'm very grateful for her generosity today. As of right now, Mom and I have raised $2293.66, which means we are 38% toward our $6000 goal. Thank you, Jeanette!

Walking around NYC definitely counts--those blocks can be long! Good luck on your training walk and big hugs! See you Saturday :)
