"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Reaching New Heights

As I continue to walk in the heat of the DC summer, Mom is taking her training to a whole new level. She and Dad left last Saturday to hike through the Andes in Peru for several days. After spending four nights in Cusco to get acclimated to the altitude, they are now experiencing the South American winter in July at elevations above 12,000 feet--a far cry from my treks in the richly oxygenated air of Arlington, Virginia (elevation: 200 feet). I'm sure that by the time Mom returns to New Jersey next month, she'll be walking like a champ!

And speaking of reaching new heights: I found out yesterday that I was promoted! Having reached this new elevation in my career at Treasury, I've opted to skip the long walk this evening in favor of enjoying dinner with some dear friends. Cheers!! It's time to celebrate!

The long walks will resume tomorrow. Have a great weekend, everyone!
