"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Independence

Mom and I have each received a new donation, and we have now raised $2182! Today, I want to thank Ellen, a good friend of mine who lives in St. Louis. Although Ellen and I have known each other for less than two years, we've been through a lot together in that time. We were both maids of honor in our good friend Suzi's wedding, and through that experience and others, we've become close friends.

Even before I knew that Ellen had made a donation today, I had been thinking of her. This day marks Ellen's first Fourth of July as an American citizen, and I'm so happy that she can enjoy the independence that we are lucky to know as Americans. The idea of independence made me think of how wonderful it will be when this world is independent from breast cancer, free from the fear that the disease causes.
