"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

On the Move

Some of you have asked me how I find the time to walk the number of miles that I have over the past few weeks. My first answer is that we all have the same amount of time in the day, and we manage to make time for the people, tasks, responsibilities, and interests which are important to us. Since one of my priorities this summer is making sure I'm as ready as I can be for the 3-Day, I find the time to walk. This isn't to say there aren't days when I wish I didn't have to walk, but I do the best I can to make time for at least a few miles every day. My second answer is that I walk really, really fast, as almost anyone who has ever walked with me can attest! I usually average about 4-1/2 to 5 miles per hour, and that is helpful because it means I can do a 12-mile walk in 2-1/2 hours or less, usually.

Finally, I manage to find time to walk because I like being active. This doesn't mean playing sports, because I have no coordination, but it does mean spending time getting my heart rate up and strengthening my bones and muscles. And apparently, I've always been a girl on the move. When I was a toddler, I started walking late, due to a problem with my hips when I was born. But as this photo shows, even before I could walk, I knew how to get around in a hurry!
