"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Rules of the Road: A New Version

On my walk from DC to Virginia this evening, I was somewhat amused to hear an interesting diatribe from a guy on the street. I've seen him hanging out along M Street before, although never as far west as the one who spends time near the Key Bridge.

As this guy made his way across the lanes of traffic at Washington Circle, he shouted, "Don't you know there are RULES? There are rules when you are driving, and I have my RIGHTS!! I am a PEDESTRIAN, don't you know it? I can walk on streets when I want, and YOU HAVE TO STOP! Yes you do. I will keep walking, because I am right. And you can say I am CRAZY if you want, but I will just keep walking, yes I will. You can call the POLICE and lock me up, but I have my RIGHTS, and there are RULES for you, yes there are."

This was only somewhat humorous, because as he carried on this running commentary, he was dashing between cars that were traveling rather quickly around the circle. And, I might add, those cars definitely had the right-of-way. There was no crosswalk anywhere near where this guy was walking, and I was concerned for his safety. But he made it safely from the center of the circle to the sidewalk on the opposite side, and as soon as he stepped out of the street, he was quiet.

I tell you . . .you never know what you're going to see on an evening walk in the DC summer!
