"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

DJ's Got A New Pair of Shoes

I don't like shoes. Well, that's not an entirely accurate statement. Like most women, I'm thrilled to find a pair of fun, strappy sandals that complement my favorite dress, and I'm a big fan of my hiking boots when it comes to trekking along the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire or hiking up a mountain in Scotland.

However, given my choice, I'd always rather be barefoot. As soon as I get home from wherever I've been, the shoes come off. And they stay off until it's time for the next outdoor activity.

But since I'm not one of those marathon runners who can run barefoot (just to clarify: I am not a marathon runner nor am I a person who does outdoor athletic activities in bare feet!), that means that every so often, I need to buy a new pair of shoes. Today was one of those days.

And now, I have a new pair of sneakers! The ones I had were quite old and tired, and since I've been walking more in them recently, I've realized that they truly are past their prime. For the past eight years, I've been a huge fan of Asics, so I knew that I wanted my newest pair to be Asics as well.

With that in mind, I hoofed it over to Off Broadway Shoes in the rain earlier today, hopeful that I'd find a pair of Asics that were less expensive than what I might find at Lady Foot Locker. Wouldn't you know? They had plenty of Asics at a reasonable price (supposedly $25 off the regular price), and in the model I wanted, but only in sizes 5 and 10. Sometimes, having average sized feet is rather annoying!

Having walked three miles there with nothing to show for it, I walked back toward the mall in Arlington, thinking to myself along the way that this was turning into an expensive walk, knowing that I'd probably end up paying full price for the shoes after all. I arrived at the mall, and Lady Foot Locker was closed!! I could see through the window that they had the very shoes I wanted, but I had no way of getting to them. I had a few other errands to run, and once those were complete, I returned to Lady Foot Locker, happy to see that the store was now opened.

Guess what? They had the shoes in my size AND they are running a special, so I got $25 off the regular price. They were less than they would have been at Off Broadway Shoes, by about $5. Which means there was absolutely no point in walking all the way out there.

Except for the fact that I walked 6-1/2 miles round trip, and that feels like an accomplishment after my 9 miles yesterday. Not to mention that I'm now the proud owner of a new pair of Asics GT-2130s which even have a stripe of breast cancer pink in them. My old shoes are going to be retired, after having walked probably close to 600 miles. Out with the old, and in with the new. Just for fun, the photo above shows the old versus the new. See if you can figure out which is which! :)
