"We hold our heads high, standing tall but not standing still. Smiling, though faced with obstacles. Independent, yet deriving strength from togetherness. We would walk forever to overcome breast cancer, though the point of our journey is to shorten the road. Our song is filled with the weight of urgency, yet lifted by the lightness of joy. In the garden of our souls, commitment is tended by optimism. Surprise us in the quiet of our thoughts and you would find us thinking about victory, even when no victory is in sight. Because we are always looking ahead, to a place of health and long life--to the time we all dream of when we may cease our walking and begin to dance."

Twelve!

Twelve. 12. Douze in French. Those who speak Arabic call the number ithnat ashar. And if you're especially geeky like me, you know that the Romans referred to it as duodecim. It's the number of eggs in a dozen. And the number of months in the year.

And it also happens to be the number of miles I walked today! I have to say, I'm pretty happy about that. I realize that this is just 1/5 the number of miles Mom and I will walk in October, but for now, 12 miles feels like an accomplishment.

I walked 1-1/2 miles before meeting up with Belle and her sweet baby girl, Sammie, at 7:00 this morning. (Well, actually, it was 7:04. Sorry, Belle!) We headed downtown via metro to L'Enfant Plaza. After a bit of a struggle finding our way out of the metro station, we finally found an open exit, carried Sammie's stroller down the stairs, and made it to the National Mall. At 9:00, Belle, Sammie, and I, as well as Belle's friends, Marci and Julie, and Marci's friend, Jo, began our 3-mile walk as part of the Y-ME event that I mentioned earlier.

We lucked out on the weather. It's started raining again now, just as it did yesterday and the day before and as it will tomorrow. But for the 3 miles of our walk, the skies, while not quite sunny, certainly were not rainy either. And Miss Sammie was a trooper! She was all decked out in pink from head to toe and rode along in her stroller like a real champ. She slept for part of the way, had two diaper changes, and even stopped for a little snack along the way. I am so happy that Belle told me about this event, and I feel honored to have been a part of it. I will post some pictures later in the week, hopefully.

So, if you're adding it up, that's 4-1/2 miles so far. We ended the Y-ME walk right by the Capitol, and from there, I walked all the way back home. 7-1/2 miles. So, there you have it: 4-1/2 + 7-1/2 = 12!

And now, I think I hear my comfy couch calling me!
